So you have Spondylosis – what does that mean?

It’s the unfortunate reality of getting older – our bodies wear out over time. Older folk are especially vulnerable to back and neck pain, and while some pain is perfectly normal, you might be wondering how much of the aches and pains are the result of ageing? Or are they symptoms of a bigger problem?

The scourge of aging

The ageing process affects our cervical spine and the everyday wear and tear can lead to degenerative spinal conditions – one of which is spondylosis. Some refer to it as spinal osteoarthritis. So what is it exactly? It’s the deterioration of the discs and joints that impact the spine’s movements and irritates the nerves and causes pain.

When felt in the neck, it is known as cervical spondylosis or lumbar spondylosis when it affects the lower back.

Oh what a pain!

Spondylosis typically occurs over time so symptoms may develop slowly. Or they may worsen quickly.

Common signs of cervical spondylosis include neck stiffness, weakness or numbness in the arms and shoulders and headaches that originate in the neck.

In most cases, pain can be treated with rest and over the counter anti-inflammatories. But there is another effective treatment that is useful in controlling the condition and managing the pain.

Reduce your spondylosis symptoms with physiotherapy

Physiotherapy treatment can offer effective pain relief, strengthen muscles and help increase your mobility.

Treatment may include deep tissue massage, ultrasound therapy, and exercise to help increase joint movement and loosen tight muscles.

Posture correction therapy can also help correct bad habits and ease tension.
