Acupuncture & Dry Needling in Sydney
Acupuncture Clinics Sydney
Looking For Acupuncture?
Acupuncture treatments or dry needling is one of the oldest recorded forms of natural medical treatment history known, with acupuncture benefits having been used in China for over 3000 years for relieving pain, muscle aches or pressure from joint or in the body in general.
What Is Acupuncture?
- Acupuncture is based on the principle that there are energetic pathways, or channels throughout the body that influence associated internal organs and structures.
- Energy from these pathways surfaces at various points on the body, identified as vital points. Each of these points serves as a tunnel, or access route, to the deeper circulatory channels within.
How Does Acupuncture Work To Relieve Pain?
- Acupuncture works by inserting needles into specific areas of the body known as acupuncture points.
- Many physiotherapists in Sydney have incorporated this treatment as part of their service protocol.
- Acupuncture has incredible power to be able to heal without going into surgery.
- The traditional Chinese view is that Qi (energy) flows freely when the body is in a healthy state. If there is a problem, energy stagnates. The stimulation frees this stagnation. The modern, scientific view is that it stimulates the brain to produce natural pain-relieving chemicals called endorphins. These assist the body to heal itself and gain pain relief. There is increasing scientific evidence to support this view.
How Does Acupuncture Needles Work?
- The needles associated are extremely fine and do not have a cutting edge, consequently it is extremely rare for bleeding to occur
- Most people describe the sensation as a numbness, tingling, or mild discomfort or ache. sometimes needle treatments like this can bring on what seems to also feel like tensing of the muscles
- When a needle is successfully inserted into a trigger point it causes a local twitch response – LTR, studies have shown that once the LTR has been elicited the electrical and chemical environment within the muscle returns to normal and the muscle “lets go”. This normalises blood flow and allows proper cellular function to return. There is also a release of specific chemicals which help repair and rebuild damaged tissue in the area.
Our Sydney sports physiotherapists have extensive training in and deploy strictest hygiene – only pre-sterilised disposable needles are used.
Extremely fine gauge needles are inserted at selected points, stimulating these points and thereby activating the body natural healing abilities. Most Sydney physiotherapy clinics have now incorporated acupuncture into their services including our own physiotherapy services

Studies have found that painful tight areas in muscles almost always harbour trigger points, which are surrounded by numerous chemicals known to cause inflammation and pain. Muscles which contain these Trigger Points are also known to have abnormal electrical activity called “end plate noise”, which sends abnormal, (noxious) electrical impulses to the spinal cord.
This abnormal chemical and electrical environment severely affects the muscle’s cellular metabolism resulting in muscle contraction and compression of local blood vessels & nerves. This causes an “energy crisis”, resulting in a self-perpetuating cycle of pain, inflammation & contraction.
What Effects Can Be Noticed Immediately With Acupuncture?
Many people experience fairly immediate changes after treatment as the muscle begins to relax and “lets go”. The full effects of a dry needle treatment are usually realised in about 8 -10 days as the effected tissue completes a repair and regeneration process.
How Many Acupuncture Sessions Will I Need?
In some cases it may take up to 5 to 10 sessions to eradicate all active and latent trigger points. Chronic conditions that have been concurrent for years, will have more wide spread changes in muscle and soft tissue structures due to compensatory movement and holding patterns, which usually require a more comprehensive rehabilitation program.
